A Helpful Way To Leave Your Comfort Zone
We’ve heard many times the value of stepping out of our comfort zone, but what does that mean, how do you do it, and is it always for the best?
Researcher, Brene Brown describes our comfort zone as “where our uncertainty, scarcity and vulnerability are minimized—where we believe we’ll have access to enough love, food, talent, time, admiration. Where we feel we have some control.”
By that definition, we’ve all been pushed out of our comfort zone over the last year. And it’s worthwhile to return to it.
The term, comfort zone, comes from a famous Yerkes and Dodson experiment in 1908 that showed stress levels slightly higher than normal improved performance, while too much stress caused performance to drop way off
So how do we inch out of our comfort zone in a way that isn’t overwhelming?
Brene Brown suggests acknowledging your fear and uncertainty and psychologist A.J. Schuler suggests having a core group of 2 or 3 people to talk to during the process.
Slight discomfort is helpful, but your comfort zone isn’t something to demonize. It’s good to be able to return to it as we process new experiences.
And of course the more we lean into discomfort, the more our comfort zone will expand.
🧘🏽♀️Mindful Dose: The Power Of Momentum
You may have noticed when you do something consistently it’s much easier to keep doing.
But when you miss extended time at the gym or skip meditating a couple weeks, it’s much harder to start back up again.
Newtown’s 1st law of motion states: “An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”
It dawned on me recently that whenever I interrupt my momentum, I’m not just taking away the time spent; I also have to factor in the additional energy it’ll take to start up again.
2 important things to note:
It takes significant energy to start something
It’s important to work routines in your day so you can continue doing a behavior with ease once you have momentum
Rockets use a ton of fuel at the beginning of their flights to escape Earth’s gravity, but need less comparative fuel once they’re in orbit. 🚀
Much like rockets we can be mindful of the initial energy it takes to get off the ground—change patterns, build a habit, create something etc and find relief in knowing we’ll develop momentum.
The key to doing something new is finding a sustainable pace and not interrupting your momentum unnecessarily.

Kanye’s album Donda has been on repeat for me. The first time I played it, I was biking from BK to Rockaway, and even as I passively listened I knew this song was special.
It’s just beautiful—about longing, pain, manifesting, freedom. The spirit is all through this one.
